A nofollow link includes rel="nofollow" (or related values like sponsored or ugc) to signal that the publisher is not vouching for the destination in the usual way. Google documents these as link qualification hints, not absolute off switches.
Comment spam, user profiles, and paid placements often ship with nofollow. That can reduce ranking-signal risk compared with unqualified spam, but it does not erase reputation or crawl noise. Large nofollow spam floods can still clutter analytics and waste audit time.
For disavow decisions, nofollow alone is a weak reason to act. Google says most sites never need disavow. Focus on clear manipulative patterns and hosts you cannot get cleaned.
Exports may tag sampled links as nofollow or qualified. Practical reading:
Sponsored and ugc rel values sit in the same family of hints. A paid post marked sponsored is usually clearer than a hidden paid dofollow. For toxic triage, still judge the host first, then the rel attribute. Export notes should say whether sampled spam was qualified so you do not overstate ranking risk.
When stakeholders panic about every nofollow spam mention, show them the live page and the Search Console Manual actions report. Absence of a manual action plus clear nofollow on junk hosts is usually a document-and-monitor situation, not an emergency disavow. Keep the toxic backlink checker export as evidence of what you reviewed.
