A disavow file is a plain-text list of URLs or domains you submit through Google Search Console so Google can consider ignoring those links when evaluating your site. It is a last-resort cleanup tool, not a routine maintenance export.
Google's own documentation says most sites never need to use the disavow tool. Over-disavowing can ask Google to ignore links that were neutral or helpful. Under-documenting spam campaigns leaves you without a paper trail if you later need a narrow file.
Use disavow only after you understand link spam policies, attempted removals where practical, and a human-reviewed list. Blindly uploading a full spam-flag export is a common mistake.
A checker may offer a disavow-formatted export after a scan. Treat that file as a draft, not a finished submission:
Scans help you build candidates. They do not auto-upload to Google and should never replace judgment.
Keep versioned copies of any file you upload, and note the date. If rankings move later, you want a record of what Google was asked to ignore. Revisit the list when campaigns change instead of growing it forever without review.
