Manual action

A manual action is a notice in Google Search Console that a reviewer found spam issues severe enough to restrict how some or all pages appear in Search. Google explains the process and appeal path in its manual actions documentation. It is not the same as a third-party spam score.

Why it matters

Unnatural links manual actions specifically call out manipulative linking. Fixing them usually means removing or disavowing the problematic links, then requesting a review. That is one of the few situations where a carefully built disavow file is commonly justified.

Absence of a manual action does not prove your link profile is perfect. Presence of spam flags in a commercial scan does not prove you have a manual action. Always verify inside Search Console.

How it shows up in a scan

A toxic backlink scan cannot open your Search Console. It can only help you prepare if you already have (or fear) link-related issues:

• Export spam-flagged referring domains as a review queue.
• Match domains to links you control or can request removed.
• Build a narrow disavow draft only for spam you cannot clear, aligned with link spam policy.

After you clean issues, use the Search Console review request and allow time for reprocessing. Keep evidence of removals and the final disavow contents. Avoid uploading an ever-growing unreviewed export each week.
